Recap: Musikfest Day 6

Many of many bands (Great White Caps, Start Making Sense, HmfO, and a new one) Jon Braun performed his first solo set ever at Lyrikplatz last night as part of WDIY’s talkback series, where musicians talk about their music and influences between songs.  Braun sounded as great as always does, albeit in a much more stripped down sound than we’re used to hearing from him.  He played a variety of covers, including David Byrne, CCR, and George Strait.  He also let it out that we can expect some new Great White Caps music.  He also performed some new music from a new project called Channel 57, a band he’s starting with his brother and will be playing at The Funhouse soon.

We finally got to try Bee’s Knees, the grilled cheese stand at Volksplatz.  This is The Hulk, make with avocado, arugula, havarti, and pesto.  It was fucking awesome.

Next up we stopped at The Defibulators at Liederplatz and were treated to quite an awesome show.  Their music was a little hillbilly, a little rock, and a whole lot of energy.  Frontman Bug Jennings even did some throat singing, a fairly esoteric practice that puts out a weird, unique sound.  Not only that, but he climbed up the light rigging on the side of the stage and sang from the top, something that I’m sure had the stage manager shitting his pants.

Lastly we caught Satellite Hearts at Plaza Tropical, who were playing to a fairly small group of people from 10:30 to 11.  The band had much more of a garage rock/Strokes sound to them than I found on their recordings, which made for a vibrant set.

Agree on the Bee’s Knees. Best new food vendor…and about time. Nice people too.
