Glasbern Inn Ending Farm-to-Table Operation as a Result of Federal Lawsuit

The Glasbern Inn, a bed and breakfast with a farm-to-table restaurant, announced today that it will be ending its farm operations and switching to using sustainable products instead.  The move comes as the inn will be selling off its farm operations and a portion of its land to pay for a lawsuit recently ruled in the US District Court for the Easton District of PA against Glasbern and its owner, Albert Granger.

The lawsuit came after a Glasbern employee was hit by a 1200lb cow and resulted in paraplegia.  The Glasbern’s insurance company, after receiving the workman’s comp claim, contends that Wells Fargo (the broker who issued Glasbern’s worker’s comp. insurance), as well as the inn and Albert Granger all acted fraudulently in not telling the insurance company about the inn’s farming operations.

The Zenith Insurance Company, as a result, was awarded damages which, according to The Glasbern, may result in a $4 million+ judgment.  They purport that the PA Compensation Bureau classifies their farm as an incidental operation of running the inn.

The inn said in a statement that it is selling the farm animals, as well as some of its over 130 acres to raise money for a $2.4 million bond to appeal the judgment.  The Glasbern opened in 1985 and began farming in 2005.

Update: The Glasbern Inn noted that they will still grow their own vegetables on-property as well as raise animals for eggs.  Meats will be locally sourced whenever possible.

What a mess! They should make the cow pay and call it a day… would hate to see that place go under for such a stupid situation.

A guy is a wheelchair for the rest of his life for doing his job…stupid situation? It was a horrible accident that changed someone’s life forever. Talk to someone that knew Jason or was there the day it happened and see if they call it a “stupid situation”. You’re an idiot. Don’t comment on things you know nothing about

It is horrible to hear such a tragic event that has happened but it is not the farms fault that it happened. Accidents happen every day out on the road. I lost my father in an accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down..he lived 4 months after that and it was an accident that happened at home. Nothing crazy just a fall that ended bad..he was only 59!! I agree insurance should pay and the Inn should take care of the workers but in no means should they lose their business. We weren’t able to sue anyone for my fathers fall and do you think God wants to get millions for an accident… Does that money help in the end the right way!!! I know it is expensive to take care of a paraplegia but not 4 million!!! He has a life and he is alive..Praise God for that as I don’t have my father at all and my children and nieces do not have a grandfather..I was only 32 when I lost my dad!!!!!!

This is a beautiful place and we can’t wait to go there again!! If this is really a messy situation it would be because of the insurance companies…how could they not know there was a farm there…it is all over the internet what this place does….From farm to table!!!! They took care of there animals and every women knows how we feel after having a baby…we can only express it in a different way. All farmers and those who work at any job know the risks… something can happen at anytime..we are not invincible!!!

My thought and prayers go out the Jason and his wife because of this and their life has drastically changed but I pray they lean on God to comfort them because only through Him will you find that peace and forgiveness!! God forgives us for our sins when we ask..he sent His son Jesus to die for us and to take that sin away….why then should we not forgive others!! I also pray this Inn and the workers learn from this and as well lean on God to heal!! We are all sinners and need to be forgiven!!

Love in Christ…D
