Hooray, it’s finally here! The first day of Musikfest (sort of). Today is preview day, which means that only the SouthSide campus will be open, and there’s only a handful of bands playing today. Today’s main stage headliner is Duran Duran, which, meh. Instead we suggest you take the time to relax and ease into the festing by taking it easy, having a few brews, enjoying the scenery, and checking out some of the free bands tonight. While you’re down there, check out the Hoover Mason Trestle if you haven’t already, and even if you have, take another look. Below are the bands who are playing at Steelstacks tonight. We’ll have some photos for you tomorrow, along with a full rundown of who to see for the first full night on Friday.
Sunshine Symphony – performing at 5pm at Americaplatz (Levitt Pavilion)
Fresh off of a win for new artist at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards, local band Sunshine Symphony covers Top 40 radio as well as other classic hits. Bonus: one of their members was profiled yesterday by us about opening a brewpub!
Post Junction – performing at 6:30, 8:30, and 11pm at the TD Community Stage (outside at the Artsquest Center)
This local jam band infuses soul and jazz into its persona, utilizing musical virtuosos like Steve Kimock the create a great fusion of sound. They’ve cleaned up at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards in the past and have been a staple of the scene ever since.
M80 – performing at 7pm at Americaplatz (Levitt Pavilion)
These guys have been all over the region covering pop and 80’s hits for years. Playing over 180 shows a year, the band, co-fronted by the charismatic Jane Train, is a great way to help kick off the festival.
Rubix Kube – performing at 9pm at Americaplatz (Levitt Pavilion)
Rounding out the set tonight is yet another 80’s tribute band who are known for their lively performances. From AC/DC to Paula Abdul, you can expect a pretty wide range of music from them tonight.
